Week 6: Tagging,Folksonomies & Technorati

Thing 13 Learned about tagging and discovered Del.icio.us.

Thing 14 Technorati viewed a few blog posts on Technorati.

Thing 15 Read a few perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of libraries. In "Row Your Own Library Boat Into the Web 2.0 Environment," Rick Anderson talks bout the preparedness of libraries to meet the challenges of the future. While I do agree with him to a point, I do see libraries (this system in particular) moving closer to meeting patron needs in the future. Services such as:
-Netlibrary and Overdrive provide customers with off site availability to books and music.
-Web-catalogs provide access to library collections and give options for users to reserve materials and have them available at libraries close to them.
-journal articles are now available on-line. And customers can now register (temporarily) for a library card to access services on-line.
-we are slowly beginning to "float" collections for patron use of aaccess.
-Libraries 2.0 allow librarians to learn and play on-line. And services are available for customers to access testing sites from home computers.

These are just a few of the ways libraries are beginning to address the ways patrons use libraries. Patrons do still need and hopefully want to come into libraries for services such as author visits, storytimes and other community based activities.

Week 4, Things 8 and 9

Thing 8 I read about RSS feeds and set up a blogline news reader account.

Thing 9 Explored MERLIN and a few other library related-blogs, including the one for Hennepin County. Also viewed a few news feeds and added a few to my blog.

Week 9, Thing 23

I have been rushing to complete the program at the last minute. I have to admit that it has been tough getting through the program. I guess my main problem is that because I really cannot envision using a lot of the technologies and many of the tools were so rich in what they provided, it was difficult to determine how to proceed through many of the exercises. At least I have gotten a good overview of what is available and I can say that I created a blog.

Week 9, Thing 22

Took a look at the titles available on Overdrive and NetLibrary. I am familiar with overdrive as I have used the service in the past.

Week 9, Thing 21

I looked at three of the podcast directories listed: linked to Hobbies and Receation on Podcast.net. Explored Learning Greek Podcast from the Hellenic American Union since I visted Greece in 1997. In Postcast Alley.com I checked out some health links. Fitness Rocks was one I recall. Yahoo Podcasts directory was probably the easiest for me to use since I have used other directories in Yahoo and I am familiar with their structure.

In Merlin I listened to the odeo 1-minute introduction to podcasting in the audiofiles. I also viewed the vodcast.

Week 9, Thing 20

Discovered YouTube's Top Favorites. Since I like cats, I viewed the Very Funny Cats,Part I video and Cat Talking Translation. I vaguely understand the share option to email and the playlist and Flagging ooptions. However I did not choose any of the options.

Week 7: Wikis

Things 16 and 17

I learned about wikis and discovered some innovative wats that libraries are using them.

I added a joke in SandBox wiki.
